The Critics Say

"Cannonball" Adderley Suite by Cecil Bridgewater. Commissioned through a grant from Meet The Composer and first premiered February 1994 in Los Angeles then performed March 1996 in Washington, D.C. , May 1996 at the Atlanta Jazz Festival and September 1996 in Springfield, Mass. Written for standard big band - 5 saxophones (doubling on flutes and clarinets), 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, bass, drums and featured soloists, Antonio Hart on alto and Vanessa Rubin on vocals.  The work includes original compositions and those closely associated with Mr. Adderley.

"NEW DAWN" by Cecil Bridgewater. Commissioned by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony in 1990 is a work for symphony orchestra and soloist. First premiered in Cleveland at the historical, Karamu House and later at the University of Illinois in Urbana as part of a celebration of African-American composers during Black History Month.  In 1999 it was performed by the Westchester Philharmonic in Purchase, New York with Cecil's quartet and in 2003 it was performed by the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Philharmonic. It was performed at two different places on the same day, Lincoln Center with the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Philharmonic and in Champaign, Illinois with the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra.
